Prince's Band

I was really excited to see Prince's band on this day. I had not seen them for awhile and was glad to see they were all fat and healthy.

The very elegant white stallion, Prince. The horses are having a very easy winter and it shows.

Prince has two chestnut mares with flaxen manes and tails, they look like sisters. This one we call Sunshine. The way I tell her a part from the other mare is that her blaze does not wrap around her cheek.

This is the other mare, Moonlight. Just look at that mane! How do these wild horses stay so clean?? This mare has only had one foal since the 2008 round up. That would be Dusty, who has left the band and joined up with Hurricane.

Posy Mustangs.

Prince lost his mares last spring...all of them, he also had another mare and filly at the time (Mystic and Madeleine). They got separated... Mystic ended up with Blazer and Madeleine with Bugs band. At first Sunshine was with Rounder and Moonlight with Blazer, but they found their way back to each other and Moonlight (and Dusty) joined her sister with Rounder.

Eventually Prince got his strength back and reclaimed his mares from Rounder.

Here is Oda, Sunshine's 2009 filly. I find it interesting how she stayed and Dusty left...they were the same age and good buddies.

Dusty knew the mares with Hurricane as they were with Rounder when she was. She seems real attached to a yearling filly in that band (Lozania).  The more I get to know these wild horses the more I can see how much power the mares have, the stallions seem to let them choose sometimes.

This was one of the first bands I met out at SWB. They like the southern part of the HMA (Herd Management Area) and are quite tolerant of people.

Jet's Band (He's Back!!!)

This made me smile....Jet has gotten his pinto mares (Razzle and Scenic) back after almost 10 months of being separated and they are right where they always are this time of year...He also has all three of his 3 year old fillies (Makani, Gypsy and Dazzle) with him. Zephyr, the grulla who was the only one who summered with him, is missing along with her 2011 filly, Zeppelin. They were last seen with Benson.

This leaves Chrome a bachelor stallion. The mares seem more then pleased to back with Jet. They never settled with Femur nor Chrome. Plus they like to be together...they are "best mare friends".

Jigsaw and Rocket

Viggo's & Tonka's Bands (Feat Jigsaw and Rocket)

I see Viggo's and Tonka's bands up on the ridge. They are coming towards me!

These two bands often like to travel together. At one time, both of Tonka's mares have been with Viggo. Each band has a 2011 colt...Viggo (bay) has the pinto, Jigsaw.

.... and Tonka, the grey, has Rocket.

This is the Rocket.

Jigsaw is hanging out with his big brother, Stomper. Stomper is a coming three year old, but still travels with Viggo and teaches Jigsaw about being a wild mustang stallion.

Jigsaw and Stomper.

Rudi, Rocket's dam, brings her colt down to where Jigsaw is...

The two colts come together for a little horse play.

Rudi supervises.

The colts have a little romp...

Jigsaw proves he is dominant !

It was such a treat to watch these two colts from different bands interact.

The SWBWH Club Local Meeting/Sat, Feb 18... Golden Cavvy, Craig, CO 2:00

You are invited to attend the third organizational meeting for The SWBWH Club. We are looking for dedicated, hard working, mustang loving people who would like to be an officer or serve on the board of our soon to be non profit group. You must be able to attend the monthly local meetings in Craig, CO.

We will discuss, among other things, the documentation of this herd. This will be our main project. We believe by documenting the individual mustangs they have a better chance of humane management. No wild horse herd of this size has ever been documented....this is an enormous task and will need to get organized before foaling season.

This is a non political group. We will work on projects...not policies. We will work with the BLM and the HSUS in a positive way to benefit the mustangs.

Mission Statement: Wild horse advocates working with the BLM and other agencies to protect, preserve and honor the Sand Wash Basin wild horse heritage and spirit....Keeping a part of our wild west alive in Sand Wash Basin.

Chrome's Band

I had heard Chrome, the dun with the 4 white socks, had stolen Femur's band last fall. Finally I get to see Chrome as a band stallion. He has one mature mare, Razzle ,and three,3 yr old fillies (most likely Jet babies)...Gypsy, Makani and Dazzle.

Chrome looks good. We have quite a few dun stallions on The Range, this guy is easy to tell apart as he has 4 white socks.

There's Razzle and Dazzle, this mother/daughter combo really sticks together. I am wondering where Scenic is, Scenic is Razzle's best mare friend. They were both with Jet post round up and then ended up together with Femur when Jet's band dismantled spring 2010. The two mares raised all of Jet's youngster's together this summer, as the other 2 Jet mares got separated and left their yearlings and two yr old fillies.

Later I find Scenic near by with Benson and her old friend, Zephyr, who also with the Jet band...

This split face black filly we call Gypsy. She is the daughter of Zephyr, Jet's grulla. She was seen briefly with Greasewood this fall, but went back to being with Femur before Chrome got her.

Another Jet filly, Makani. Her dam ended up with Centauro (Sun Spot).

Razzle..

She will be coming three. Femur has kept Jet's coming 2 yr olds...Nimbus and Kinstry...another friend reported seeing the trio together. She also though Nimbus might be a filly.

We will have to see if Chrome has what it takes to keep his harem of mares and fillies.

Benson's Band

Big boy Benson has found himself some mares! He has Scenic (pinto) and Zephyr (grulla) plus Zephyr's 2011 filly, Zepplin.

These two mares were part of Jet's band which splintered this spring. Jet lost his entire family at first and the Zephyr found her way back to him and had this beautiful filly. The three of them were together this summer. The other pinto mare, Scenic, summered with Femur.

Zephyr, the grulla, is very wary of people. She did not stick around for long.

Benson seems to be chasing them...the mares are making the decisions here. Scenic's best mare friend, Razzle, is near by. She ended up with Chrome. I will blog about that next.

Zephyr and Zeppelin....what has happened to the black, Jet?

It is nice to see Benson with a band. I don't know if this will last...time will tell.
