Chief/JimmyDarkSandBand

The Band led by the two bay stallions.....The Chief/Jimmy band.
JimmyDarkSand

The Chief...these two stallions work together to keep their three mares and their youngsters.

To me it looks like Jimmy claims this mare, Barbie. She has no youngsters with her. She had a filly in 2009 we named Britta who now runs with Dan's band.

These are Chief's mares. The white one is Vermillion, the darker one, Darcy.

Darcy has a nice new filly we named Jane on facebook. Isn't she a little cutie?

These are the yearling colts....Dreamer and Kanoa.

Roper has been dogging this band for well over a year now. he keeps Jimmy and Chief on their toes. ...there is one other horse in this band I did not show...Spook, she is Vermillion's 3 yr old daughter. Also Megan, Darcy's 2 yr old filly, Megan, is gone and has been seen with Storm's band.

Isadora and Shadow

Centauro's Band (Feat Isadora)

Centauro's band...this is one of the largest bands out at Sand Wash Basin.

Here is the youngest member of his band....Isadora. Something has happened. it looks like she got stuck in mud and another horse pulled her out? She looks a bit thin and a little tired, but is keeping up.

Look out Isadora! There's  Centauro, the Spanish Grey, getting fresh with Isadora's mom, Isabelle.

Things settle down and the little foal has a drink.

Centauro has another 2012 foal, this colt...Shadow. Shadow was an early foal. He was born back in March. He will be a grey like his sire. You can tell by the grey goggles around his eyes. I love this little guy!

Shadow and Isadora.

Shadow with his half brother, Kona. Kona is the full brother to Isadora.

Centauro with his grey/white mare, Sun Spot. Sun Spot joined this band last spring. She came from Jet's band.

Sun Spot has some good wind knots in her mane going!

Centauro's mare, Reyna. It doesn't look like she will have a foal this year.

Last year she threw this beautiful filly, Tierra.

Sun Spot and Irma. Irma is the mother of Isabelle...grandmother to Isadora.

The band stallion. This band had the most foals last year...four.

Centauro challenging Cimmaron, who has a small band of his own.

I leave the little filly in peace. I hear later soon after this she got separated from her band, but has since rejoined them. The mustangs never cease to amaze me.

Cody's Band

The only change to Cody's band since last fall is this cute new foal we call Question. Her mom is Hope. Cody has two mature mares, Hope and Cosima. They each have a stripe. Hope's goes right and Cosima's goes left.

Here is the other chestnut mare, Cosima. She has her 2 yr old filly, Rosie, by her side.

Cody's other mare is actually a 3 rear old filly from Tashunka and Ska Wakan. We call her Chikala. She is very pregnant. She left her family band last fall.

This Handsome grey guy is Slate, Question's half or full brother. He is a two year old like Rosie.

Cody is a good band stallion. I feel blessed he let me have a look at his new filly. I hope by documenting this herd they will have a better chance of humane management. In my opinion they are some of America's most beautiful equines. They have such good bone and hoof. These are the descendants of the horses that settled our country.  We must work hard at preserving this herd. Out of about 150 or more mares that could have babies only 20 have had foals this year. I believe we can manage them on the range with numbers like this.

Tashunka's Band

Tashunka is the roan front and center. He has three loyal mares who each have an adorable yearling filly by their sides
The band stallion, Tashunka.

Tashunka's black mare, Kangee. She joined this band in the fall of 2010.

Kangee had this little bay filly last year, Ladore. We can tell her apart by her two rear hind socks, her snip and round star.

Ska Wakan is Tashunka's grulla mare. She has been with him since thew 2008 round up. Last year she almost died. She had her foal and then started losing weight. Somehow she made a come back and raised her 2011 foal successsfuly. She also has a 2010 filly, Chikala, who is now with Coty and is expecting any day.

Ska had this gorgeous roan filly last year, Tecomseh. She is the oldest of the three fillies.

Tashunka's third mare is the bay with no ear tips (probably frost bite). We call her Moda which means Little Bear in Lakota.

Moda's 2011 filly, Lilka.

Cobalt's Band

Here is the black's band (Cobalt). Cobalt has one mature mare, Mahogany, her 2011 filly, CJ, and the three year old filly out of Ohitika and Chipppewa, Skye. Skye has a new foal. He is a colt. We named him Vodka.

The new guy. This colt looks really sturdy and strong. Another sorrel! This seems to be a popular color this foaling season.

The big black, Cobalt with his daughter CJ.

Bachelor Stallions Plus Cinder

Today I see this wonderful group of wild horses. They are all bachelor stallions except the little dark grey one. I am almost certain that is Cinder. She is only an yearling and I am wondering why she is not with her family band (Prancer's). This has happened to yearling fillies before, but it is unusual. She has a slight limp.

The stud colt leading the way is Falcon from Eagle's band (The Bird Herd). He is a 2 year old and this is the first time I have seen him with bachelors. His mom, Lark, recently had her 2012 filly, Robin, and Eagle must have told him it was time to fly.

This handsome pinto is the son of Picasso and Mingo. We call him Tango. it has been a long time since I have seen him. He is now a three year old and is really blooming. He seems to be in charge of Cinder, but is scrapping with Hawk over her.

Cinder....her mom is Josie who was last seen with Prancer. White Out is the most likely sire of this greying out filly. I am only 90% sure this is her. I'd have to see Prancer's band to confirm, but the stars match up in older photos of her.

Look at those perfect hooves! This is Hawk. He is a three year old from Centauro's band. Reyna is his dam.

The mustangs go to Sheepherder Springs for a drink.....

The catch pond is empty. We are in severe draught.

Our BLM installed this solar panel pump which is filling this old trough. I have never seen horses drinking from it, but other folks have.

These four do not drink. They move on to the next water hole....Here you can seee how dry it is.
