White Out

I spot another grey band stallion on the range today. Here he is on the right, on the left is Sterling, the 2 bands were hanging near each other on this day.
Here are the 2 bands together. It's hard to see the grey stallions, especially White Out, he is so white!

Here's White Out with his 2 mares and 1 foal, Sterling is in the background.

I'll call this little guy River, he will be a grey.

River's mom, Josie. She is also lead mare ( out of 2 ).

This mare is gentle and kind. I will call her Ivy, she is a solid bay. She is a sturdy Sand Wash girl, 100% mustang.

White Out, yet another grey Sand Wash stallion, but he has his own look, wonderful!

Feather, Streaker and Buck

Here is Streaker the little black colt with a big blaze, 4 white socks and a pinto marking on his side. His mom, Feather, is a sorrel pinto who is very fast. Watching them travel across the the Basin is a sight to see! When I first spotted these guys they were way in the distance. It took a bit to realize it was Feather and Streaker with a very good looking Sand Wash stallion!

Feather is very flighty, she is difficult to get close to. I'm sure she has been through at least one round up which must be so traumatic for these wild guys. Why can't they think of a more humane way then using helicopters? Barbaric.

Here is the cute family together. They stick very close together for safety. Feather seems to make the decisions. She is a wise, wiley mare.

Family portrait. Streaker reminds me so much of my Sand Wash boy except for being black.

I really likes the looks of this guy, Feather got lucky, he really watches out for her and Streaker.
I will name him Buck.

I didn't stick around too long, they were very wary, especially Feather. What a gorgeous Sand Wash family.

Bachelors

Ranger
Here are 2 of the boys I saw on this day
Here are the other 6. I think it was Snow Man, Thunder, Roany, Storm, Outlaw and ??

Thunder!! Here's Roany and Outlaw scuffling in the early morning.Facing off.

Here comes Roany!

Here's Thunder on the ridge, he was paired up with Snow Man this day.

I'll call this handsome fellow, Outlaw.

This was one of the most amazing encounters I've had with the mustangs yet. My batteries ran out in my camera which was maybe a good thing because I just watched in awe as the frisky stallions sparred and played amongst each other. At first I just saw 4 and then the other 4 came charging down ( they never saw me). The noices coming out of them were amazing! In the end they banded together in a line and just ran and ran so gracefully through the rugged sage country until they vanished. I was totally in awe and felt so blessed to have witnessed this. I will forever be an advocate for wild horses. They are just so spectacular in their element.

Cowboy and Voodoo

The majestic bachelor stallion, Cowboy
First time I got close to Voodoo, I think he is a beauty!

Cowboy is seen with various bachelors. He is so shiny and healthy looking. Big boy!

These guys are wintering well!

Vanishing Mustangs

The land seems to suck them in....

Snow Man finds a friend

I find Snowman with Liberty ! Do not mistake these guys for domesticated horses. They are wild and free and would like it to stay that way!  12/11 I think the white horse is White Out

Proud and Mighty Sand Wash Stallion

Here's Sterling. He demands respect! He is the type that would try to stand up to a helicopter if he his family was in danger.

Sterling's band

Here is the family band consisting of 4 horses. The band stallion, Sterling, black mare... Crow, Crow's black foal, Star, and satellite stallion, Kokomo.

The cute little Kokomo, full of personality.
One of my personal favorites, Star, he is a little stud colt.

Star with his mom, I think he is going to grey out. He is a real mamas boy.

Sterling lets Koko right near the mare.
This is a loyal band stallion, he has the scars to prove it.Crow is a mellow horse and looks after her litttle Star.

Sterling seems to love the camera.

The family weathers out the snow storm.

Femur's Band

Femur's mares and GemTraveling along the ridge line

What a day out at The Wash. I ran into Femur's band, they were grazing on a snow covered hill. He is still with his 3 mares and one very cute foal, Gem. They did not want to be bothered. Crow (?), the black lead mare made that clear as she lead them away, following a ridge line. All horses looked to be in good shape. Beautiful Mustangs!

Snow Man Alone

I love the Snow Man! Hope he finds some friends!
Here you can see his mustangy profile.
He still has plenty of scars from being attacked, but healing nicely
This is my favorite picture of this stallion, he came running right towards me to check me out.   (12/11...Looking back on this post I believe this to be White Out)

Greasewood.. athletic and proud!

That's Greasewood picking on Roany. The other 2 horses are Cowboy (lead) and Rudi. Many of the impressive stallions I have met are bays, Corona's bay foal also looks like he is going to have nice build. This is GREASEWOOD!

Sage, Yellow Cat, Vogue and Gem

I think Sage, the bay band stallion and Yellow Cat, the dun mare make a very handsome couple, don't you? The litlle paint mare is Vogue, to me she is the essense of a wild horse, the word for her is wiley! The only 2009 foal in this group is Gem. He has an impressive strip like Sage's. I have a good shot of him in previous post...

Nomad (?), Voodoo, Rudi and Cowboy

Here's Nomad, the buckskin, displaying some brawn. I love the horse he is dueling with. Love that silver mane, Inherited from band stallion, Cosmo? Cowboy is the ref. Rudi stays out of it. Sometimes I think Rudi is an older horse (shes a mare)....just pondering. But this clip is all about STORM!

Mystery group

I just saw these horse this 1 time...

Cosmo's band

Here are the horses that make up the dappled Grey's family band He has quite the harem of mares, but only one foal. Their colors are absolutely amazing, everyone different.
Cosmo walks right towards me! It took them a little while to accept me, but once they did they really relaxed and let me observe.

The handsome band stallion, Cosmo.

Mating in January? I wonder if this is from the PZP?

Cowgirl looks a little muley from this side view. All mustang this girl.

Here's sweet looking Tulip and her coming yearling, Juniper.

Jess, born in the wild. She is a free spirit, untamed, a symbol of the American west. Does anyone know what color she is? Very unusual. The silver in her mane is striking.

That is Cosmo on the right with Jess and Cowgirl. They seem to be finding plenty to eat in this area, but I'm not sure they are in the refuge. I hope so for their sake. If they escape the BLM is allowed to round them up.

The seemingly black mare is really a grulla. Where is her baby?

Tulip, she is the lead mare. I think she is awesome.
