Lightning, Prince and Buck

Here is Lightning, the stallon with the amazing mask.
These horses have very tight bonds with each other. I wish I knew how they are related. They have one yearling, Flash, he is on the left.
A very pregnant mare. A friend of the mustangs gave her a very beautiful name, Pablina. She is flea speckled. Very sweet girl.
I am pretty sure Sky is either a 2 or 3 year old. Her eye lashes are white on the right side. She has a strong bond with Haze, the young sorrel stallion.
This is Haze, his right eye is blue. He is curious and intelligent.
Dot, Sky and Haze. I wonder if Sky is her daughter?
Or maybe Haze is her son? So many mysteries out here on the range. The horses aren't talking.
Lady took Madeleine behind a tree to nurse. Hard to hide when you are so white!
These 2 horses are such great buddies.
This is a great looking band of horses! They are fun to watch.
Love this new filly!
She has a little independent streak, but mostly hangs out right next to her mom.
They are off to hide behind a tree. Look at that little fluff for a tail.
This is one of Prince's mares. He has 2 that look a lot alike. They are both chestnuts with flaxen manes.
As you can see, the stallion is not too worried about people. If you go out to Sand Wash you might see him and his family near the entrance. He is kinda little, his mares are taller then him.

Prince has 2 fillies, this is the grey one.
Here is the chestnut filly, one of my favorites, sooo cute! I call her Oda.
Here is Buck, his mare Feather and her baby Streaker. This photo doesn't do justice to the little guy. He has 4 socks. Before the round up Buck had a larger band and Feather was part of it.
Here is the stallion. He is a buckskin that has rolled in the mud.

Jet and Company

Today I see Jet and his band of 10. About a couple of weeks ago I had observed Zephyr, the grulla mare, had given birth to a a light colored foal. I really wanted to get some photos of the new foal so I sneaked up...

Now that I am closer I can see Sun Spot's yearling is a grulla. They are so darn spooky!

Off they go, not easy getting near this band... They are all accounted for and I get a look at the new foal. I'm pretty sure he is a colt, he is very fast! He goes right up front with his mom.

The way I can tell it is Jet's band is by Razzle, the pinto mare with a swirl, it is really distinctive.

Jet is one of the most amazing band stallions out at Sand Wash. He is super athletic and dominant. I'll say it again, he does not trust people!

The perfect new colt is a light dun color, blends in beautifully.

I give up on Jet's band and continue my tour of this magical place. I spot a new bachelor (to me) and he is a beauty.

He is with the Cowboy look a like I call Ranger. Yes, there are 2 horses that look like this even though it is such an unusual coat pattern.

This is Outlaw, he reminds me so much of my guy. He was hanging out with Chrome, near Lightning's band.

Chrome, he has 4 white stockings. He is a lined back dun.

Check out the color of this stallion. Kinda like buckskin turning to grey. I wonder if he"ll be a grey with a black mane and tail? Anyway he is stunning.

He has this mare and a yearling. The mare we'll call Splash. She looks different depending on the angle.

The little family. There are so many small bands like this. I would guess the average size of a Sand Wash band is about 5.

These guys were semi curious, but never relaxed. So nice to watch them float around.

Splash from the left side. She is a pre painted Indian war pony!

Slow down!

Oh oh a Sombrero horse got in the mix. I spot her brand right away, she has 3 bachelor stallions wanting her.

These 2 do not have her, but is causing friction between them. The dun is chasing the smaller black around.

This black has a distinctive front right sock. He is the one being chased around.

Here is the big black that has claimed the Sombrero girl ( for now ).

This guy really put on a show, really handsome.

Personally I don't think this mare would last living out with the wild horses. Good thing a Sombrero guy was coming as I was leaving to try and catch her. Good luck! I'm sure it is not the first Sombrero horse to get in with the wild horses, they share a fence line in the winter...

This guy, the other black in the group, is very stocky. Look at those legs!

He seems very pleased with his new "dudey" girlfriend.

Next I spot this small group of bachelors.

Here is all 4 of them. The grey one is very lame on the front end.

They let me view them briefly and they were off.

The pinto stallions turns around for one last look. Thank you wild horse brother.

I spot this big mare right in the water. Surprise!

I like this guy. Any ideas on what color this is? Sure is pretty.

This bay was with the group.

They headed out pretty fast, into the juniper trees.

On my way out I see Jet's band again, this time a wee bit closer. I see jet in the distance chasing down a white horse at a full gallop.

Here is the new colt. They all look out for him.

He sure is cute and healthy looking!

This is Prince's band watching Jet's girls go by. They are the opposite of Jet's band, very mellow and easy to get near...

Look how gorgeous Sun Spot's grulla is. I don't know if it is a colt or filly...Sun Spot is for sure pregnant!

Such a pretty sight. As I am watching I hear the sound of galloping hooves coming towards us. It is Jet the amazing black stallion and off they go disappearing into the vastness of their high desert home.
