The Medicine Hats

Here they are The Medicine Hat gang! Led by the hansome, awesome Sand Wash band stallion Viggo, the bay on the right.
Brother sister combo, they also happen to be best friends!
John calls her "Miss America". We love her. And so does her auntie Raven, who alays has a watchful eye on "the human". Raven is the maiden black mare in the background.
Mustangs must have amazing hooves in order to survive on the range. Here is Raven showing off her perfect four.

Tuscarora's Band

Here is the sturdy, stocky, loyal, wild, grey Sand Wash band stallion, Tuscarora. He is a family man. He has two beautiful mares and two yearling fillies. Here he is shown with his youngest daughter, Goldie.
Here is the entire band. These horses are very wary of people. I don't over stay my visit. I let them obseve me and let them decide when they have had enough.
The yearling filly on the right is big! She is a little bit muley looking, but defiently an American Mustang because she is able to survive out here in the fierce elements. We named her Dolly.
The rose grey mare out front is Dolly's dam. Look at the size difference between Dolly and Goldie. From my observations I have seen foals born from March to October. There is a big age difference in the yearlings.
Snaking his mares. Tuscarora has a Spanish Barb look. These horses were DNA tested and Iberian was the number one breed in their blood...it really shows.
Dolly at the awkward stage. She is as wiley as they come. She was born to run free with her family on the open range.
Goldie nursing. Here is her shy black mom, Gaia.
The rose grey mare....Talia.

Tonka's Band

Video of Sparrow and Boys

Sparrow

Today I find the little bay filly, Sparrow, with a big group of stallions. There she is on the right.
The two horses on the left are yearlings, Moon and Nick. The pintos, Kiowa and Willie, are older bachelor stallions.
Sparrow seems quite content with these guys, maybe they wil help her survive by looking out for her.
Here is the handsome dun, Roper.
See how little Sparrow is not developing correctly? I don't know what is wrong with her, but she is awfully thin.
This little roan got kicked out of his family band early. He has been with the bachelors for much of the summer.
This is the other yearling. He has been with the big boys since at least this spring.
Kiowa. the pinto, was in charge on this day.
Here is Roper's mustang profile.
As I observed them, I only saw them being nice to the little filly who is from Eagle's band.
That's Willie Nelson out front. He is a magnificant color, a grey pinto. He is also very tall....a real stand out in this herd. Even his tail is greyand white, just stunning.
At least Sparrow has a couple of horses her age in this group. She seems to be good buddies with the roan, Half Moon. I am really pulling for this underdog along with other folks in our group that love these wild horses of Colorado.

Cosmo's Band

Today I see the grey stallion Cosmo and his lovely harem of horses. He has traveled way far from where I normally see him. But 10 miles is not very far for these mustangs to travel.
The little late filly, Heidi, is showing signs of greying out like her band stallion.
Cowgirl is looking fat and happy. She has neither a foal nor an yearling. She is an auntie in this band.
Heidi is lucky her dam is strong and fit to help her get through the winter that is fast approaching.
Here is Jess. Another dry mare, behind her are the Bears Ears.
The horses like to nibble on greasewood, the bright green plant that is prevalant on the range.
This band of horses is very tolerant of people. But do not push them....let them observe you.
These new age mustangs that trust people will be easier to manage....We just need to be respectful and horse savvy. This is the 2010 colt with Cosmo, Astro. He is a good 4 months older then his sister Heidi.
This is Gem, who just recently joined this band with her mom. She is a yearling. I am pretty sure she is Femur's daughter, just look at the similar shaped stripe. She is a real mommas girl.
The horses look good after the recent rains Sand Wash has recieved....
Heidi again....That's Vogue in the background....Gem's dam.
Cosmo is a very spanish looking mustang. He has one of the larger bands on the range.
Cosmo's 2010 filly and colt. Heidi and Astro...named by public club.
And off they go! I feel blessed to have seen this fine looking group of wild horses on this beautiful October day. All looked sound and healthy...blooming. Always a pleasure to spend some time with Cosmo and his girls plus Astro.

Picasso's black yearling son with the prominent snip has left Picasso and the rest of his family to be with the bachelor boys.

Bird

I am very lucky today, I get a close up view of the shy little filly, Bird, and her elusive Sand Wash family.
Bird, as you can see, has a very prominent snip and she is as black as coal. She is getting her winter coat, which she will need for the upcoming winter. Tempatures are extreme on their home range of Sand Wash Basin, Colorado.
The band stallion, Silverado. I have no idea why he was being so tolerent of me. Normally he runs. The horses are like that. Different flight zones on different days. I feel honored he lets me document his family.
Family portrait. I find out the black with the star is a stud. Maybe a big yearling? He needs a name if any one has one. The sorrel mom has been named Celeste by a member of the group.
I love Bird!
Such a petite little filly, she, like so many other 2010 foals, she is the only baby in her band.
Therefore she plays with her big brother, or trys.
He is more into giving back rubs. These mustangs spend a lot of time grooming each other. Some bands are better at it then others...Silverado's band is good at it! All their coats are shiny and blooming.
Needs a name yawns. This is one content horse......On this day the two bachelor stallions, Aragon and Zeus were tagging Silverado.
