Cosmo's Band

I find this band of eight horses on a cold, wintery day. Cosmo is a very tolerent stallion. He seems half asleep on this day. The mustangs have gone into winter mode. They have slowed way down.
There are two 2 year olds in Cosmo's band, here is the grey, Juniper, on the left. (I will now call all the horses born in 2009 two year olds, just to make it easier). Here she is foraging with little Heidi who was born late this year. I estimate her to be about 4 months old.

The new snow is very drifty. Juniper plunges right in. Heidi was a little hesitant, but did it with ease!

Heidi was all over the place, going from band member to band member. Here she is with the pinto mare, Vogue. Vogue just recently joined these guys with her filly, Gem.

Here is the other 2010 foal besides Heidi. He is a solid chestnut with an upside down heart for a star. We call him Astro. He was a spring colt.

Cosmo, he is looking good and taking things as they come. He is quite a strong "pawer"....I observed him hammering the ground with his great big mustang hooves. He is shown with his son, Astro.

Heidi goes to where she feels most comfortable, next to her great big grulla mom.

She is doing good for being so young...she is mustang tuff!

The horses help each other to get to graze and forage.

She has that "primitive" look. No mistaking this filly for a domestic!

Here is the pinto mare, Vogue, with her daughter. They are very tightly bonded. If you see Vogue, Gem is never very far away. She is bigger then her dam, but still nursing. Vogue never had a foal this year. I have yet to see a 2 year old filly get kicked out or leave her band at Sand Wash. Plenty of yearling colts left, some even early this spring, but the fillies seem to stay. The only exception I can think of would be Sparrow, Eagle's filly.

She is a liitle mestengo, real feminine and wiley. Very typey Sand Wash look. I love Vogue! She was one of the first mares I was able to get close too. Before Cosmo she was with the bay stallion, Femur.

Tulip, she is the mom to Juniper and to Astro. The dun on the left is Cowgirl. Both of these mares looked sound and handling the winter just fine.

No mistaking this grey mare in Cosmo's harem....she has a half ear and a distinctive "smudge" mark on her left shoulder. She has no offspring. Actually 3 of the mares in this band do not have any offspring, including this mare, Pearl, Cowgirl and the other rose grey, Jess. That means lots of aunties for Juniper, Astro and Heidi!

Pretty winter mustang.

I am glad Cosmo's beautiful band is doing so well. This winter is much harder then last....
