Chief's Band &More

The first band I see on this beautiful spring day is Brave's. All members looked good. Ginger, the dun, came out of winter very thin, but now she looks better and is not pregnant. Brave hung out with Chief's band all last summer, but their relationship is over. Brave lost one of his mares (Vermillion) and her yearling filly (Spook) to Chief. Now he has Ellie and her stand out palomino filly, Flirt, which he stole from Bear, our branded black stallion who has not been seen this year.
These are Cortez's mares this year. The big bay we call Athena who was with Solaris last year is with him. She has a young bay foal that must have been born last fall. He or she does not look more then 6 months old. I found out later who stole his pinto mare. It is not easy to get close to Cortez.
Cortez's band. Sorry about the bad photos. My camera is not working properrly and my spare one is in the shop. Bear with me. Cortez is a dun with an hour glass shaped blaze.
The grullo, Renegade, is parked in one area with his very pregnant mare, Mia. I am so glad I am seeing this guy this year. Last year I hardly ever saw him. That is the way it goes out at Sand Wash. There are plenty of places for a mustang to hide here.
The grullo's family. The two year old on the right is a filly.
That's Lightning, still alone over by Two Bar Springs. He lost his band last year to Rounder and seems like he never got over it. I do not like to see stallions alone for so long.
One of our bad boys, Hurricane. This is a mature bachelor stallion who will challenge band stallions for their mares.
This is Hurricane's partner in crime, Haze. These two have been traveling together for quite some time. Haze came from Lightning's band. He struck out on his own when Rounder took Lightning's mares. He has one blue eye.
That's Flash. He must have just got the boot (hoof) from Rounder. He is Lightning's two year old colt that went with his mom when Rounder took him. His mom just gave birth to a new filly. More about that later.... By the looks of it he just left his band. He was running around, alone, looking a little confused.
OK now I am finally getting to Chief's band.
Chief is a bay, but not this one. This is JimmyDarkSand, a bachelor stallion who is now a satellite stallion for Chief. Look how close Chief lets him get to his mares.
Rounder, the dun bachelor, is also with Chief's band today, but acts more like he is tailing them, trying to get a mare. He is usually with Kiowa, his buddy, but no sign of the pinto today. He looks great and I would not be surprised if he gets a mare or two this year.

Chief has stolen Brave's white mare, Vermillion and her filly, Spook. So now he has three grey mares, all different shades.
There is the band stallion, Chief. You can tell him apart by his long forelock and rear left sock.
This is the only yearling in this band. She was born early last spring. We call her Megan.
Moving on....this is a grullo stallion I have never seen before. He was very shy and very beautiful...
....he was traveling with Snip, Picasso's two year old son. Another great day out at The Basin...
