Here she is. I think she will be a grey, but for now she is covered in red new born fluff. My friend that had seen her from a distance 4 days ago said the cord was still attached. She is less then a week old. Such a chunky little filly!
This is one of the yearling brothers in the band, Cabellero.
I was surprised to see Juniper, Cosmo's two year old filly, with the band. She seemed content. All horses in this group looked great. They are not quite shedded out, but soon will get that "blooming" look.
The two brothers playing under first light. They grey is Diego. He is the new filly's brother or half brother. Pablina was with Lightning for a short time after she had Diego and then joined Rounder. Hard to determine who the sire is on so many of these mustangs.
Pablina is a very elegant mare. The foal lucked out being born into this band. Pablina is an experienced mother and Rounder is a very protective band stallion. I am shocked he let me take these few photos. He stood back and watched me and seemed to show off the new baby! Usually Rounder runs whe he sees me coming. I spent hours trying to get photos of this band last fall. They were very spooky. That's just the way wild horses are...
Welcome to Sand Wash Basin.... a modern day 2011 Mustengo.
The liver chestnut band stallion, Rounder, watches over his harem.
Both mare and foal are super healthy. Here she plops down for a brief nap.
Pablina has had enough and leads the little filly away. This was a great encounter. Worth getting up in the middle of the night for! This mare was one of the first horses I saw when I began documenting in the fall of 2009. At that time she was with Lightning. I was able to observe them through the winter of 2010, which makes them special (they all are ) to me.
