A Day on the Range

I always enjoy seeing this tough little wiley bachelor stallion, Voodoo. I usually see him with his sorrel overo stud buddy, Cowboy, but today he is on his own. The new girl has arrived from the HSUS and here we were indroducing ourselves...Voodoo introduced himself as well. Quite a show off. He had a little rumble with the bay band stallion, Viggo as we looked on. The next encounter was with the grey stallion, Dusk, with his pregnant mare. I do not recognize her...The last time I saw Dusk he was with bachelor stallions. She seems young, but in good health. Both horses are wary and I only observe them briefly. Here she is. I am wondering if this is Bonnie from Bonnie and Clyde, back when they were weanling orphans. They were with Shadow and Sundown then, another bachelor (bay). I'll have to do some research. I saw Cortez and his band streaking across the deset. I laugh when people call the SWB a "tame herd". They have not seen this band. The dynamics here have changed. Once again I must look back at older photos. I am grateful the HSUS is here doing a documetation too....Hopefully they will pass it on to us when they leave. Who is the little bay horse? He or she looks like a late 2010 foal. The next band I see takes my breath away! From left to right...Frosty, Jackpot, Casino, Lady, Lucky, don't know, Apollo (band stallion), Blondie, Honey, new foal...the 2 bachelors...Dalor and Beau. Hey, anyone want to put a name on the new foal? Please make it simple! lol Here are the two bachelor stallions who are tagging this large band. It is the roan Dalor and the white, Beau. It was great to see both had made it through the winter. Beau was horribly beaten up last fall. I see he has a new wound, but overall looks in good nick. I think of Dalor as old, but do not know, luckily the HSUS has that recorded. Well, they at least have the general age of the mustangs that were rounded up in 2008. Anyway he has an amazing mane, as you can see. Ok, here is the band. This is the new foal. He is a colt! There is the dun mare we call Honey with her head down. She looks thin. She also has a yearling filly by her side. Hopefully she will gain weight quicky. There's Lady and her yearling colt, Lucky. I had see their old band stallion, Vegas, was a bachelor, but did not know where these two went. Lucky is gorgeous! And here is Vega's other mare, Casino, with her colt, Jackpot. They are now with a new white stallion....Apollo. Apollo is on the left...He has grey smudges on all four knees. I had only see him once as a bachelor stallion alone last spring. I had heard a white stallion had been lame all summer and I am wondering if it was this guy. He is a beauty and is real typey Sand Wash Looking. I think he has sired a few little mustangs in his life on the range. Not only has he take Vegas's mares he also got a couple of the sorrels, Solaris's, including the dun with the foal. I think this is a small family band I never ID'd last summer...can't confirm. Flirt. Viggo's Band.....Another great day at the Wash...I am so thankful the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is here for the summer documenting. It is a huge job, this is a big place full of places for wild horses to hide. Horses escape, horses get dumped. We must all work together to preserve the heritage of this unique group of mustangs that call SWB home. ...One last thing, Butch and Sundance, the palomino half brothers, are back together again. (-:
