Early Spring Sighting
I am pleased to say Prince and his harem of mares and fillies made it through the winter and are all looking good!
Here is Oda, one of the coming two year olds. She was very frisky on this windy spring day!
I had to look twice to make sure the little filly was Madeleine, she has really changed color (once again). She is shown here with Prince who keeps an eye on her. Madeleine was born into Lightning's band last spring, but her mom, Mystic, joined Prince soon after she gave birth to the exoctic colored little filly.
That is Madeleine's dam, Mystic. She turns into a ghost pinto in the summer. She has wintered well.
The very hansome, one of a kind band stallion...Prince! You could easily confuse him for another white stallion, White Out. I believe they are both older stallions judging by their color.
Here is the other two year old filly, Dusty. She is changing colors too. Just a scruffy little mustang with a heart of gold. Look for a lot of action around Prince's band this summer with these maturing fillies.
For now Oda is safe with her mom. Prince has two chestnut mares with flaxen manes. They look so much alike it is uncanny. I still can not tell them apart. Luckily we have more folks studying this herd that are aware of the subtle differences.
This encounter was very brief. The cold March winds were blowing and the roads were barely passable. I was very lucky to get a few photos. I was reminded wild horse viewing can be an extreme sport.
Here is one of the "twin" chestnut mares.

Great photos and documentary on them!
The chestnut mare in the last photo is Moonlight. She is the only chestnut in the band whose white doesn't go over the side of her face. :) And Prince and White Out have 1 major difference... Prince has pink on his nose where White Out does not!
Looking forward to getting back out there to see them all again :D
Hi,
I rescued a palomino paint from 3 Strikes Ranch who was born and caught from the Sandwash Basin herd in 2005. She was also starved prior to 3 Strikes and has been through a lot. She is with me forever and we adore her. I was wondering if you minded if I use one of your earlier pictures of Whisper (with credit and a link to your blog) to share Chloe's story? I simply wanted to say that I could imagine Whisper being her dam b/c they look so alike. I cannot find your email but I can send you pix and video of Chloe if you would like to see her-if so please email me at smrp007@gmail.com Thank you kindly and I love your blog,
Sue
I think you mean Cheyenne, she is Corona's lead mare....My e mail is micahflash@gmail.com. I would love to hear more about your horse's story. We also have a facebook page to share....Sand Wash Basin Wild Horses. Join us
there!
Thanks for the clarification Sally!
