Greasewood's Band (warning:graphic images)

I knew Greasewood had been lame, but have not been able to get close until today...his back leg looks horrible and he has lost a lot of weight.

He is not putting any weight on the bad leg and is gruntng in pain. To me it looks like he got tangled up in some wire.

There is Demi, the domestic. She is still with him and looks pregnant.

The bay stallion also has the chestnut mare, Yarrow, and her grey daughter, White Sage. To me it is unbelievable he has kept his mares in the shape he is in.

The little mare, Yarrow, has had her own problems. She went lame this spring and it continued on throughout the summer. She has healed, but will never be the same. Her front left hoof is deformed. To chase her with a helicopter would be certain death. Most likely they would see the hoof as a pre existing condition and put her down. For now she is doing pretty darn good.

White Sage is a huge two year old.

I wish we had corrals on top of the hill. We could put down some hay and I believe this band would go for it. We could Dr Greasewood, pull out Demi and her unborn foal, work on Yarrow's hoof....maybe adopt out Sage. This would be a more modern way of management and more humane.

....but for now the mustangs are on their own. They are very near a sheep camp. I worry the dogs will get this stallion.

Here you can see the horizonal line which I think is wire. I feel so bad this happened. I am more determined then ever to get a local group formed where we can help these wild horses. I would love to see a series of clean up days when we could remove all the down fencing, tripping wires and loose bailing wire...it is everywhere.

Thank you so much for posting this Nancy. I know it must have been very hard.

It looks like Davy G's leg isnt healing as it should. That seems to be proud flesh as well. I totally agree with your suggestion of humane trapping to get them out of there ASAP. Its heart breaking to say the least.

I also support you in getting together a group maybe that will help with some of the hands on local issues. A top priority besides getting the SWB horses out of Holding and adopted is to get a volunteer team to round up as much wire as can be found and removing it from the range. IMOP the BLM will be happy for volunteers to do this as a project, although I can't speak for them.

I love being able to see these wonderful animals through your eyes. Davy Greasewood's was my favorite painting of all the ones I did this year. I'm very sad about this development.

Looks like a tremendous amount of proud flesh and swelling. It may heal on its own, but I'd be surprised if he was ever sound on this leg again. Absolutely looks like it was caused by wire. Hopefully there is not wire in the cut itself. The horizontal line could be cracking in the proud flesh due to temperature changes and continuing growth of it, but unless we can get him knocked out so a vet to look at him and get that wound cleaned up there's no way to tell.

Sure looks bad for Greasewood. It appears to be loads of proud flesh and infection. I can only imagine how painful it is for him. Short of being able to get a vet out to knock him out, clean it up, and assess his chances of survival there's nothing we can really do for him. Hopefully there's not actually wire wrapped around his leg. The cracking could be from the continued growth of the proud flesh and the temperature changes.

Such a pretty horse. I feel bad that we last our friend. Let me know if you get the cleanup organized. I would love to come and help. Please notify me so I can plan to come out and help.

This is so very sad to see. Nowhere does it say a horse has to suffer like this when there are humans who can help. It is not because they are wild that they have to neglected like this. Yes mother nature takes her course but he is obviously in serious pain and there is serious sign of infection here... His progeny will leive on his legacy for sure but the mares will find another herd and there is a possibility the foals once born will be killed by the new stallion. If there was ever something that someone could do to help would be great. Certainly hoping this does not end here

Im so sorry for the Loss of Davy G. But greatful for the quick action of the BLM in taking care of the euthanasia and the autopsy to find out what was going on with the leg. Trica unfortunately it was a 15 inch peice of wire. I morn the loss of this stallion with all of those who loved him and followed his life.

Gissy Ive never heard of a stallion on SWB ever killing a foal no matter whose foal it was. Any offspring of Davy Greasewood will be well looked after by his band.

I am considering supporting a wild mustang. I am alarmed at the decision of the BlM. I would like to know how much if any your organization plays in any of their decisions? Do you make a difference? That horse could of been taken care of and I dont understand the process that goes into this decision?

I would like to think I am making a difference by bringing awareness to this herd. I am in the process of trying to form a non profit, but it is hard to find any people with time or money. For now I am running The SWBWH Club as a business. It is expensive for me to do this and need sponsorship. The BLM uses my information, but does not pay me...

Hi Nanacy,
Love your photos and info on these majestic animals. I posted yesterday under Anonymous. I believe in your cause and am seeking to find out more information. I dont trust BLM at all, have to be honest. I will be contacting you via letter. I would really love to become involved in your cause. Very concerned over BLM and their ideoligies. Thank you so much.
