Ash's Band

We saw Ash and his band in the distance..we decided it would be worth the hike to go visit these gorgeous mustangs! I knew Twister's band had broken up and Ash had his 2 year old grulla filly, Whisp. There she is on the right..

I also noticed the little 2012 colt we call Trooper had turned blue! Oh my gosh he is a pretty colt. Just clings to his young mom, Bonnie. Bonnie has lost her yearling filly Sioux, but she is right near by with Volcano's band (more about that later).

There is Whisp, Twister and Shady's 2010 filly. Shady is also near by with Volcano's band.

Ash looks great! You could almost call him "fat"! He is a young stud I first met in the spring of 2010. He was with a "bachelor" group that included the bay filly he has now, Bonnie. She was with another yearling... a colt...Clyde. Ash was with Sundown taking care of these "orphans". I would say Ash is around 5 or 6 years old...just guesssing.

Ash looks down at Volcano...

Volcano accepts the challenge and makes his way towards Ash...

Volcano wins out this time..

Ash returns to his family band.

Ash's Band

Here is a little band of wild horses I do not get to see very often...Ash's band.

Here is the grey stallion, Ash.

Ash has one mare, Bonnie. Bonnie is a 2009 filly. I first saw her the spring of 2010 as a yearling with a group of bachelor stallions including Ash. She is one of our "teenage moms". She had a foal last year as a 2 year old and this year she threw this beautiful little colt we named Trooper.

He will be a grey like his sire. He is a strong and sturdy little mustang.

Bonnie...no white on those legs.

Here you can see she has a tiny star that is usually hidden by her forelock.

The new guy...Trooper.

Here is the curious yearling filly, Sioux. As I was taking photos of her new brother she snuck about behind me and seemed to say "hey, what about me?"

Ash is looking at Twister's band in the distance. He is submissive to Twister and moves out of his way.

Dusk's Small Family

My friend and I were very lucky to have an encounter with Dusk on this day. She has come a far to view the mustangs and has a special fondness of Dusk, whom she calls Ash. She knows him better then I. The last time she saw him (last fall) he was very beat up. I saw her smile as we see Dusk (Ash) is blooming and has a young mare and her filly by his side.
Actually, we had to hike a ways out to get a look at them, but they let us approach and seem to show off the new filly. She is a nice bay with a great big star...my friend names (ID's) her as Sioux.
She is a sweet heart and very full of herself on this day. By the looks of it she was an early foal. She has good size to her already. The mare is quite petite. We decide to call her Kootchie, but I have to look back at my records and see if it is not a filly we called Bonnie last spring.. I want to make sure we do not count horses twice. They need all the help they can get. We need to buy some more time to study these rare Colorado mustangs. Yes, there are quite a few foals, but there are also mares with none.....also many horses have escaped or perished. We must take this into consideration when we count the individuals.  Sidenote 9/10/11  This is the 2 year old Bonnie who I obseved last year with the other orphan, Clyde and 2 mature bachelor stallion...this one, Dusk and the bay, Sundown.
Dusk makes a wonderful father and seems to take pride in his very first filly!
He has a lovely neck and beautiful coloring. He has chosen a spot to stay away from other horses on this day. Look for this stallion to get more mares....I think he has what it takes.
