Yellow Man's (Cyclone) band

The Band Stallion

His black mare, Crow.
Crow's 3 year old colt, Star, is still with the family band and acts like a satellite.

Crow's 2010 filly, Owl

The second mare is Pearl. I have not observed her with any offspring since 2009. Before Yellow she was with Cosmo. You can tell her by her red smudge mark on her left shoulder.

This & That

I am way behind on this blog. I thought I would try to get some photos down before I go back. Here is the bachelor Lightning, still traveling alone, but doing a bit of sparring with the other stallions. Lightning was a band stallion until 2010 when Rounder took them over. Lightning put up a heck of a fight. back then Haze was his satellite stallion, who ended up turning on him...Since then he has been a real loner horse.

Anyway here you can see we are in draught. It is sad to see. We can only hope for rain.

Prince has a beautiful new filly in his band. We call her Hopscotch and every one agrees her color is exotic. She was born to the 3 yr old filly, Oda, who is most likely Prince's daughter, but there is no inbreeding here. Oda and her mom, Sunshine, got split up from Prince spring of 2011 and were not reunited until around November. Oda and her mom were briefly with Blazer and then summered with Rounder.
Oda's dam, Sunshine, (Hopscotch's Grandma) helps with the new filly along with "her twin chestnut sister", Moonlight..

Prince (Merlin)

The old black mare in Yellow Man's (Cyclone) band, Crow.

I still can not figure out who this grey colt is. He is running with bachelors up on The Ridge.

The sorrel is Voodoo. He has mares, but still likes to leave them for a bit and romp with the boys.Hhere he is playing with the palomino, Skip. Skip is the 3 year old colt out of Hazel and Bugs.

Here are Voodoo's two mares. The black one, Streaker, is clearly pregnant. The dun is Yellow Cat..Voodoo acquired these mares last summer (2011)... Streaker is only three.

Tripod is doing good. I observed him rearing up and playing rough with the other stud colts He has been disabled since he was a newborn, but surprises us all with his hardiness.. Here he is with Rooibos, the little sorrel with a small split in his stripe.

Jigsaw is now a yearling. I thought this photo would be good for our ID cards.

Jigsaw's dam, Kira, another one for the ID cards..

I just liked this photo of Robin from "The Bird Herd". She seems like a vivacious filly who is growing up with her two rowdy brothers, Meadowlark and Falcon.

Yellow Man's Band

Today we saw Yellow's band right off. They are easy to spot....I think of them as "the black and white band". Nothing had changed since the last time I saw them, all members still present...no new horses.

There's Yellow Man.

The black horse greying out is Star, he is a two year old colt still with his mom. Yellow is probably not his sire. In 2009 he was with Sterling...Kokomo was the satellite stallion. He grew up as an only foal until his sister came along late last fall.

Crow is a true black and a very good mom. She is also Yellow's lead mare. She did not have a foal this year.

The "little sister" that I mentioned...Owl.

She is a real sturdy little filly. I think her sire is Sterling.

This photo does not do Star justice....he is a real stand out with that silver mane and tail.

Pearl is the other mare in this band. She has not had a foal since the 2008 round up. She is easy to tell apart by her half an ear and a smudge mark on her shoulder. Maybe pregnant this year? Hard to tell as she is such a round mare anyway.

The mustangs are having an easy winter although the forage is scarce. They are competing with thousands of domesticated sheep who also are taking advantage of a mild winter.

Yellow Man's Band

Lto R  Pearl, Yellow Man, Owl, Crow and Star

Yellow is a nice grey stallion who has a lovely Sand Wash family. He was a loner untill he acquired the black mare, Crow, and her then black baby colt, Star, who is now a 2 yr old and is slowly turning grey (Silver). Owl (filly) joined the scene late last summer. She is Crow's  2010 foal. Pearl, the grey mare joined them in the fall of 2010. She came from Cosmo's band. They are usually near White Out's band, but not on this day.

Femur's Band

Femur's mares and GemTraveling along the ridge line

What a day out at The Wash. I ran into Femur's band, they were grazing on a snow covered hill. He is still with his 3 mares and one very cute foal, Gem. They did not want to be bothered. Crow (?), the black lead mare made that clear as she lead them away, following a ridge line. All horses looked to be in good shape. Beautiful Mustangs!
