Femur's Band (Feat Wanda)

Lucky, lucky me... I get to see the new filly in Femur's band! She is a beautiful little dun that is all legs! We have named her Wanda after Wanda Walker, a local Brown's park legend who recently died.

The most likely sire of this little girl is Voodoo, but one can ever know for sure. Yellow Cat has not has a foal since the 2008 gather. She was with Femur the year after the gather, but soon left him. She spent over a year with Blazer and wintered with Voodoo and Streaker. She came back to Femur a couple of months ago.

It is unusual for a foal to be born so late on the Range, but not unheard of. Last year we had a colt (Kanoa) born in October, who is a healthy yearling this year.

There is Wanda with the other 2012 foal in her band, the grulla, Sunka Wakan. He was born about two months before Wanda. It is nice to see a band with more then one foal, that is somewhat unusual out at Sand Wash.

Sunka Wakan's dam, Kinstry, is only two years old! I remember when she was this small. Her dam is Zephyr and Jet is her sire. When Jet's band broke up spring of 2011 Kinstry, as  a yearling, ended up with Femur... without her dam.

The crabby (jealous?) grey is also a two year old out of Jet's band, Nimbus. Her dam is Sunspot who is now with Centauro. I am glad Yellow Band has joined Femur to help out these young fillies (Kinstry & Nimbus) who were orphaned at such a young age.

Look who is leading the way! It is nice to see the wild horses looking so great even though Northwest Colorado is in severe drought.

Femur's Band (FEAT Sunka Wakan)

Finally I get to see Femur's band with the little primitive looking colt, Sunka Wakan. I also see the big dun mare, Yellow Cat, has joined this band. When I first started observing this herd in 2009 Yellow Cat was with Femur. Since the she has been with Blazer and Voodoo.

Sunka's dam is Kinstry. She is a 2 year old filly from Jet and Zephyr. She got separated from her family band spring 2011 and ended up with Femur.

Shy Guy

Isn't he something? I just love those stripes on the legs!

Maybe this is the year for Yellow Cat to have a foal? I am so glad she came back to Femur. I think her experience will be good for this band.

It sure is nice to Femur (right) looking so content with his small family. He had been a bachelor stallion on and off post 2008 round up, up to last spring when he got most of Jet's band. The two new Jet foals, Doc and Watson, are most likely sired by this handsome bay stallion. The little grey filly on the left is another Jet 2 year old, Nimbus.

Voodoo's Band

It was good to see Voo Doo, the feisty little chestnut stud, up on The Ridge with his two mares, Yellow Cat and Streaker. Voodoo was a bachelor stallion up until last spring (2011) when he met Streaker, the striking black pinto filly. Later he added the dun, Yellow Cat.

Streaker...it must have been about 11 months ago she got together with Voo Doo  because she is very heavy with foal. Streaker is only 3,Yellow Cat is a bit older.
There's Yellow Cat. Is she not a pretty mare? When I first met her (2009) she was with Femur then later was with Blazer. She was Blazer's only mare for the entire summer of 2010. To my knowledge she has not had a foal since the 2008 ound up and is part of The HSUS PZP study.

I am looking forward to seeing Streaker's foal. You can not see here (photo above shows), but she has 4 stockings and a lightning mark on her side. A real stand out! Voo Doo seems to think so too! The mares seem to get along great. Yellow Cat will help Streaker raise her foal. It is a beautiful thing to see!

Voodoo's Band

It was nice to see Voodoo and his two mares, Yellow Cat and Streaker.

The pretty dun is Yellow Cat. She was with Blazer up until recently. She does not seem as content with the new guy, Voodoo. She seems to be pining for something in the distance. The former HSUS employee told me Yellow Cat had really drifted around since after she was rounded up in 2008. Hopefully the next time we "gather" them, we can make sure the bands do not get torn apart.

Voodoo....I just love this tough little stallion. He is all mustang.

Streaker is only a two year old filly. She was an only foal to Nomad and Feather. She was always a little flirt. She seems very happy with Voodoo. They get my vote for couple of the year. A very handsome pair indeed! People have told me she is a sabino pinto. She has four white stockings.

Voodoo and Streaker watching a dirt bike in the distance.

It has really got Yellow Cat's attention.

Voodoo has gone from a bachelor to a proud Sand Wash band stallion this summer. It is nice to see.

Blazer's Band

The sorrel stallion, Blazer, has added more mares to his band. Last summer it was just him and the dun mare, Yellow Cat. They had a very tight bond and trailed "the mob"....Brave and Chief's band and the bachelors that tagged...But things change.
Here he is with his original mare, Yellow Cat. Before she was with Blazer she was with Femur along with Vogue, Gem and a black mare.....The HSUS told me she had switched stallions many times post 2008 round up. She seems very happy with this blaze faced stud (Blazer) she is currently with...
This is Dusty, Prince's 2 year old grey filly. She has joined Blazer and brought her chestnut mom, Moonlight, with. Moonlight does not seem happy with this arrangement!
The other mare he acquired was Mystic, also one of Prince's mares. She has seperated from her yearling filly, Madeleine, who I see later with Bug's band. Mystic joined Prince last spring with her newborn, Madeleine. before that she was with Lightning.
So there's the new band...Blazer, Yellow Cat, Mystic, Moonlight and Dusty. They are hanging out near Chief and Jimmy's "mob". I have a feeling Yellow Cat is from that family...who knows? It would take years and an army of people to properly document this herd. This place is huge and the mustangs know how to hide.

Femur's Band

Femur's mares and GemTraveling along the ridge line

What a day out at The Wash. I ran into Femur's band, they were grazing on a snow covered hill. He is still with his 3 mares and one very cute foal, Gem. They did not want to be bothered. Crow (?), the black lead mare made that clear as she lead them away, following a ridge line. All horses looked to be in good shape. Beautiful Mustangs!
