Cobolt's Band



Our beautiful black stallion, Cobolt. He is quite shy and I do not see him and his small family band very often...just got lucky on the day.

Cobolt has one mature mare, Mahogany. She is on the right. We call her 2011 filly CJ. The horse on the left is a 2 yr old filly from Ohitika's band...Skye. On this day this band was right near Ohitika's. The horses are like that.

The sorrel with the long thin stripe is Ohyee...she is Mahogany's yearling filly. These two are most likely full sisters, although one could never know for sure.

The elusive mare. This is about the closest I have ever been to her. The wild horses are getting more used to people, that is for sure.

This band looks in good shape going into winter. Long may they run!

Cobolt's Band

Here is the shy, elusive band led by the black stallion, Cobolt.

I had to hike quite a ways to get a good look at them, but it was worth it. Such a great looking band. Cobolt, like many "band" stallions, has just one mature mare. Here is is.

The mare, Mahogany, is wary. Her new filly, CJ, is lying down aways from here in the grass. I respect this and do not put any pressure on her. The filly with the long stripe is Ohyee, her yearling daughter. The other chestnut is the 2009 filly, Skye, she came from Ohitika's band.

The foal gets up and heads straight to her mom for a suck.

I don't stay long. I can tell they want to be left alone. They do not trust humans. I just feel fortunate I get this little glimpse into their very secret, mustang lives.

Cobolt's Band

Here is a band I do not see very often and when I do see them they are very shy and usually sneak away. It is Cobolt's band. Cobolt is the black with a small star. He is all mustang with his roman nose, good bone and wiley disposition.

A rare shot of the stallion with his lead mare, Mohogany. She is very pregnant here. She is part of the HSUS's PZP study. In my opinion, leave her alone. I am not totally against PZP, but believe we should be more selective .

The little yearling filly with the distinctive long, thin stripe is Mahogany's daughter, Ohyee. She is shown with her new "sister", Skye, who is Chippewa's 2 yr old filly from Ohitika's band. I have no idea when or how Cobolt acquired her, but she looks well taken care of.

I took this photo a couple of weeks later. Mahogany has had her foal. We have called her CJ. Always fun to observe this elusive little band of wild horses that call Sand Wash Basin home.
