Here's Femur, the bay, named by the shape of his stripe by the HSUS. When I first met him in the fall of 2009 he had three mares. But slowly he lost all of them and was a lonely ole bachelor stallion last year. A few folks got to see him because he hangs out towards the front and is quite tolerant of people. At one time I had ID'd him as Sage, maybe earlier in this blog. He was one of the first mustangs I had the pleasure of meeting.
No mistaking this mother/daughter combo...Razzle and Dazzle.
This is Gypsy, she is a two year old filly that got seperated from her mom when Jet's band broke up. Her mom is the grulla, Zephyr. I last saw Zephyr with Centauro, but she was not settled . She also lost her yearling filly, Kinstry to Femur.
The other mare that got seperated was the white, Sun Spot. She also was with Centauro the last time I saw her....she was mixing well and very pregnant. She also lost her daughters to Femur. This is the older one, Makani. I am 90% sure this is a filly. One of the many 2 year olds on the range this year.
Little Nimbus...he is Sun Spot's yearling colt. He is being well taken care of by his "aunts". He was born just about this time of year last year, he greyed out fast.
This is Kinstry who I think has the look of a primitive horse. She was born early last spring on the banks of the Little Snake River. She is a Jet baby out of Zephyr.
See the stripes down Kinstry's legs? A real gem this one. She reminds me of a Pryor Mountain Horse.
All that space and the mustangs huddle. They are very touchy/feely animals. They love being together.
Gypsy is a beaut and easy to tell apart except there is one another 2010 filly that looks a little like her, but quite different if you look closely (if you know what I mean). Anyway that is Sugar's (the grulla pinto currently with WildWind) filly, Spice, whom I have not seen for ages.
These mares and youngsters are quite shy. They can't believe when Femur approaches the water hole with me close by. Jet would never do that!
Femur is unconcerned.
I don't think these mares are convinced this is the stallion for them. They seemed much more harmonious with the handsome, athletic Jet. . He had the most mares pre round up.... I have no idea what happened. I have since seen him running around...he looks fine. I guess just nature's way of shaking up the genes. I am happy for Femur!
They will "get over it" and eventually sort things out. Wild horses usually do. They lead amazing, complex lives. The two pinto mares who have all of Jet's yearlings and two year old never had foals last year. I wonder if this has something to do with why they took all the youngsters. Also I believe the grulla, Zephyr, lost her foal this year. I saw her very pregnant in March and then no foal....
It was so great seeing these mustangs. I had not seen them since last fall. I reported last summer that I thought Scenic, the other pinto mare besides Razzle, had lost her yearling black colt. He was pure black with a little smudge for a star...I am pretty sure he perished, but you never know out here. Anyway he still hasn't "shown up", otherwise all the horses are accounted for and looking good!
