Corona's Band

Here comes Corona!

Corona's band had only one foal this year. This little sorrel born to Lona. We call him Tecate. Notice Lona is missing her right eye.

Can Wakan, the beautiful yearling filly out of Lona... full sister to Tecate.

There have been some recent rains and the mustangs are blooming!

The gorgeous Cheyenne, she was acting as lead mare on this day.

Corona's grey mare, Indian Rose, with her yearling colt, Indiana. Indian Rose did not foal this year.
Alert and attentive... the wild horses are watching folks picking up their range for National Public Lands Day, put on by The Little Snake BLM office.

Corona in his prime. He has had the same loyal, four mares since the 2008 gather.

Corona's Band

Here is Corona's band, You can see the sorrel mare with the 4 white socks is very pregnant. Yampatika, the grey mare's 2010 filly, has been missing for about a month.

Corona's Band

I have been seeing a lot of Corona and band this winter. His band is doing great....this is one of the largest bands on the range.

Most of us agree Cheyenne is his lead mare. I am not sure, but I think she might be pregnant. She has not had a foal since 2009 (Tripod).

Isn't she beautiful?

That is the little palo filly we call Can Wakan. She is trying to get a sniff of me.

Corona has kept both of his two year old fillies. One of them is the bay show here, One Spirit. For awhile this fall the fillies joined Cosmo's band. Maybe to get bred? Any way they are both back with their harem.

This is the other two year old filly, Maybell. She is a full sister to Can Wakan.

The grey mare, Indian Rose, is shy and hard to photograph. It is her and the sorrel mare that have the foals. The black (Em) and Cheyenne are not so prolific.

Indian Rose's youngsters (Yampatika and Indiana Jones)....She also has a two year old colt that runs with the bachelors (Craig), but he has not been seen for a very long time.

Corona is a loving father.

Corona's Band

Lucky me....I run into Corona and his band on this day. The spectacular "dunalino" is looking magnificent! He is looking over at Cosmo and band. Somehow Corona's 2 yr old filly, One Spirit, has ended up with them. Everyone seems OK with this except for One Spirit, who keeps looking over at her family band, but I think this is the way is is going to be. This is nature's way of making sure the mustangs do not inbreed.

Cowgirl, the big dun with Cosmo has befriended One Spirit and they stick together.Cowgirl has not had a foal of her own since the 2008 round up. The other mares are not as accepting, but I am sure it will all work out over time.

Here is Corona's black mare, Em, One Spirit's mom. She does not seem too concerned her daughter has left. This is another mare that has not had a foal for a couple of years.  It might have something to do with the PZP, but I also believe some mares are just not as prolific and the weather might have some effect. The winter of 2010 was brutal. These mustangs were 2 feet of snow with bitter cold temps and very little to eat. The horses are becoming rare. For instance in Cosmo's band he has 5 mature mares, but only one had a foal this year.

Can Wakan...Corona's little gem. She was born early this spring. She was just a little ball of fluff. She has grown into a beautiful little creature. She really inherited her sire's good looks. I couldn't take my eyes off of her....she is just so cute. Super healthy and curious. here you can see she is getting her winter coat.

Corona with his 2011 filly, Can Wakan (Sun Dance).

Little Indiana Jones. He was born after Can Wakan. He is an independent little guy and has what it takes to be called a wild mustang.

Corona striking a pose. He seems to know he is special.

Maybell looks over at her sister, One Spirit. Maybell is the other 2 yr old filly from Corona's band. She is still with her dam. Her wind knots are coming undone and starting to break off...look for this filly to leave her family soon.

The palomino in the middle is Bobby, Corona's yearling colt and also the only colt in this band. He is a full brother to Can Wakan and Maybell. He has a corded mane like his sire. Bobby was the first wild foal I ever saw. He is special to me...they all are!

The Basin received some good rains last week. Look how clean and shiny our pretty boy is.

Corona in his prime. I pray he will not be harassed by a helicopter.

"snaking" his mares.

Corona's Band

Here is the other 2 year old filly in the band besides One Spirit. She is Lona's. Just a nice sorrel. Named after a nearby town.

Yampatika has the "primitive" look. She reminds me of a Pryor Mountain horse.

Corona in his prime.

One of the largest harems on the range..
The bugs were so bad on this morning...you can even see them if you look closely.

The palomino pinto, Cheyenne, is Corona's lead mare and companion. She came in with him at the 2008 round up. She also has not had a foal since 2009.
Did you know it is really hard to get good photos of black horses? At least it is for me. I wanted to show you Corona's black mare, Em, who has been recieving a lot of attention from the stallon recently. She is not a prolific mare, she has not had a foal since 2009. That filly, One Spirit, is still by her side. She is the bay in the band.

Corona's beautiful babies....
This is our pride and joy (and Corona's too) his little palomino daughter, Can Wakan, who was born a couple of months before Indiana. She has inherited her sire's good looks...for sure.

Indiana Jones sneaking around the high desert with his full sister, Yampatika. Both have the grey mare, Indian Rose, as their dam. Their 2 yr old brother, Craig, also a sorrel, is out running with the bachelor stallions. The only colt in this band is Bobby, Lona's yearling. Lona is Can Wakan's mom.
What a wonderful morning! The first band I see is Corona's, our famous dunalino.

Trailing the band is the newest member, our very own Indiana Jones!

Corona's Band (feat Indiana Jones)

Corona's grey mare finally had her foal and it is a beautiful little sorrel colt! We have named him Indiana Jones! This is my first glimpse of him...
The newest addition to Corona's band. He was born just about the same time his sister was born last year and about in the same place. He looks healthy and range tough.
Here are some other members of this stunning band. The sorrel mare, Lona, is shown with all three of her offspring. The mare resting her head on Bobby's back is the alpha, Cheyenne ,(palomino pinto)
Corona was most interested in his black mare, Em, on this day. She also has not had a foal since 2009. Her bay 2009 filly, One Spirit, is still with her.
That is the early filly (born in April) Can Wakan. She is a eal standout and seems to know it! She loves to pose for the camera...or so it seems...
The only other colt in the band besides Indiana Jones, Bobby. He will be a palomino like his sire. The mares take good care of him. He is a Sand Wash beauty!
There is Can Wakan. Bobby is her full brother.
The little guy has a nice star and is kinda little....not as stocky as Can Wakan when she was a newborn.
The one and only....Can Wakan. She is growing fast and is a real jewel of The Basin. Love her!
All legs this one. Salute to The Wild Horse Gods!
Just about perfect. He was born into a harmonious band which will help in this extreme environment. Corona is a good band stallion, he really is in his prime. it is something to see..
He might grey out. For now he has his fuzzy newborn coat and little fox tail.
Learning from his mom, Indian Rose. She is an experienced dam and also has her yearling filly, Yampatika by her side. She had a sorrel colt in 2009 we named Craig. She kicked him out as soon as Yampa was born last year. He is now running with the bachelors.
Indiana Jones...Long may you run!
Here is a shot of the handsome band stallion, Corona.
