....and this is Astro
They are both only foals in their small family bands.
This is one of Astro's aunts that help keep him safe. We call her Jess. She is a typey mustang.
Astro is molting! But otherwise he is sturdy and healthy!
He copies his other family members to learn the ways of a wild horse. Telephone poles make good scratching posts.
What color will he be? His band stallion is a grey and so is his mom.
There he is with his mom, Tulip.
Another grey in his band...this mare lost the tip of her right ear! probably frostbite. The winters can be brutal. She does not have a foal like so many of the mares. She was given an experimental contraceptive drug when she was rounded up in 2008 along with 61 other mares so she does not become pregnant. Luckily the drug is not 100% effective.
There is Astro's band stallion, the one and only Cosmo!
A moment with mom....
Madeleine is in Prince's band. Here she just woke up from a nap.
This is one of her yearling sisters, Oda, with her gorgeous chestnut mom, Moonlight.
She has a very feminine look. Sweet little filly.
The Sand Wash basin was blessed with some rain this weekend. Always needed and welcomed.
That's Dusty, Madeleine's other filly sister.
Like Astro, she is molting her newborn baby coat. She will eventually grey out.
Oda and Dusty. I am almost sure they are half sisters. They are defiently best friends.
I pray Madeleine and Astro have a future of living free on their home range. We must preserve this herd! They are true American mustangs who have evolved( or not evolved) to live in this extreme environment. We must not lose this gene pool! They are the one and only Sand Wash Mustangs!
