Here are the new guys. Bobby, the white guy, was born very early in the spring. Yampatika, the little fawn colored filly, was born later.
Here is the little filly making her way across her high desert home. She is a natural! That's Whisper tailing, the underdog. Read below.
Lona seems to be telling Cheyenne a secret...
Here is Corona, aka "Fabio".
Yampatika, probably about one month old.
She keeps right up.
Here is the gorgeous chestnut mare with the four white socks....Lona. With her are her yearling colt and her new pale colt, Bobby.
Mustang brothers.
Corona. He has been out here awhile, it shows. He knows the ways around Sand Wash and looks out for his family.
That's Bobby again...there is another pale colt in this group, he is somewhat disabled. He is not growing properly and I seriously don't know if he'll make it. For now his family takes special care of him, especially Corona. He seems to favor that mare and always looks out for little Whisper...aka Tripod. Anyway, Bobby is a healthy, sound little colt. He is the first wild foal I had ever seen. He was named by a friend of the mustangs for her mom who has passed away.

Absolutely beautiful! I enjoy your narrative about the relationships. Someday I would like to be able to spend some time observing your wonderful herd.
Thanks Karen! They are just as much your horses as mine.....everybodys and nobodys. Sure hope you can visit some day. These guys need human friends!
Nancy, I feel the same way you do about trying to raise awareness about what is happening with these wild herds. I would like to express what their life is like and how important it is they remain intact. So, I would love to get up and see the Sand Basin herd. I'll be in Salida next month for a workshop, but I'm unsure if I can get loose.
Bobby resembles our filly Corona quite a bit, but he really does seem "white," even compared to her. He has dark shading around his muzzle, it looks like, and she's pale, but she's not a perlino or cremello. Love the stripey legs on little Yampatika. Glad to hear about "Tripod" - Whisper. I thought the same when I saw him last year ... love to see him still hanging in there!
