I've dubbed the yearling bay stud colt with Chief, Hawk. Here he is with his new wild horse sister.
Hawk and his dam.
This is the sorrel filly and her grey mom in Chief's band also.
Here is her friend from Brave's band. She is also a yearling filly out of the stunning white mare, Vermillion. Brave and Chief are the bay stallions that work together to keep the few mares they have. I call this filly Spook, she is a personal favorite!
No mistaking this stallion for a domestic horse. He is as mustangy as they come! Brave.
I call this pinto Commander. he would like some mares of his own, but for now is a bachelor stallion.
Madeleine with her stallion, Prince. She reminds me of a litte giraffe!

Stallion wars
They came to some sort of agreement.
Blue Sky, the young mare from Lightning's band has left her family and joined up with the handsome dun, Storm.
I love the blazes out at Sand Wash. This mare has a good one. Yarrow.
This is the grulla pinto mare from Centaura's band. I believe she is alpha mare.
The pregnant bay and her yearling bay stud colt from Centauro's band.
The black finally made his way back into the "refuge". He was stuck on the other side of the fence for a good month. He is back and feeling good. He was looking for trouble on this day. He is one of the bigger, stockier stallions. The grey is Centauro, he is a little guy, but dominant.
Barcus. Named for a creek that flows over in the Piciance area. That is a neighboring HMA. It makes me sad to think they are slated for round up Aug 1. The area over there is being developed for energy....big time. Sand Wash is not safe from energy development.
We must preserve the few remaining wild horse herds in Colorado. If we lose Piciance, there will be only 3 small HMA's left in Colorado, with Sand Wash being the largest with less then 300 horses.
Anyway, here is Barcus watching Lightning and the new bachelor that is following his band. Lightning seems to be run down, showing his age. I think the other stallions can sense this.
Lightning's lovely mares, yearling and 2010 colt, Diego.
Lightning.
I know I've seen this guy, I'll have to look through my photos....A liver chestnut beauty boy.
I love this little filly. She is an only foal, like so many, but hangs out near other bands.
Strider can usually be seen running with his big brother, River.
Here comes Trouble!
Brave's dun and Chief's grey.
This is a foalless couple. They are so in love, it is obvious. Blaze and Yellow Cat. I believe Yellow Cat is Sage's daughter. she was with him last fall and she has his stripe.
Chief's scruffy new filly.
Trouble.
Barcus and new bachelor (to me).

Commander is stunning, if I was a mare I'd be checking him out! ;) Poor Lightning - he's still beautiful though. Blaze and Yellow Cat are SO cute!
